Giants to sign Pablo Sandoval to minor-league contract: report

Sat, 2024-02-17 16:04

The Giants aren't yet placing a rush order for Panda hats to be delivered to Oracle Park, but beloved fan favorite Pablo Sandoval does have a chance to suit up with the team again this season. The 37-year-old Sandoval is expected to sign a minor-league deal with the Giants and will receive a non-roster invitation to spring training, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic. After not playing in the major leagues since 2021, Sandoval will get an opportunity to make a comeback with the team he helped win three World Series titles.

In 1,380 career games, Sandoval has logged a .278/.330/.443 slash line with 262 doubles and 153 home runs.

Where is Alyssa Nakken, and when will the trailblazing coach rejoin SF Giants' staff?

Sat, 2024-02-17 09:14

Alyssa Nakken is more than just the first uniformed female staff member in major-league history. After giving birth to her first child last month, the trailblazing San Francisco Giants assistant coach is now baseball's first mom, too. It was a mystery how Nakken's pregnancy would affect her status with the team this spring, but manager Bob Melvin provided an update Saturday. “She may be here for a day or two,” Melvin said.

Can a new number, new facial hair and new nickname give Casey Schmitt a fresh start in 2024?

Sat, 2024-02-17 07:30

Casey Schmitt has a new number, new facial hair and, he hopes, a new nickname. “I'm gonna go by '1-0' now,” said Schmitt, a wisp of blond hair gracing his upper lip, referencing his new jersey number after his old one, No. 6, was taken by new manager Bob Melvin. Will it add up to a fresh start for the San Francisco Giants' slick-fielding infield prospect who burst into the big leagues last season but stumbled down the stretch? While Schmitt bookended his rookie season with fireworks, recording more total bases in his first three games than any player in Giants history, then homering twice against the Dodgers in the final game of the year, it wasn't enough to obscure what transpired in between.

The hardest thing Patrick Bailey does everyday is gulp down 1,000 calories. “It's literally just like, hey, we need you to eat something,” Bailey said. While he is listed at 210 pounds, Bailey dropped a substantial amount of weight over the course of last season. Rising from Double-A to the big leagues, Bailey put more stress on his body last season than ever before.

In first spring with SF Giants, Jordan Hicks is building up more than velocity

Fri, 2024-02-16 13:23

For the fourth time in his life, Jordan Hicks arrived at spring training as a starting pitcher. “My whole life, this has been my dream,” Hicks said Friday, following his highest-intensity bullpen session of the young camp. Since signing a four-year, $44 million free-agent contract this offseason, all that matters to Hicks are earned runs and innings pitched. If the latter is large and the former reasonably low, Hicks doesn't mind a drop in velocity.
