San Francisco Giants outfielder Lee Jung-hoo broke a brief hitless streak with a double in his team's 3-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California on Monday. Batting third and starting in center field, Lee went 1-for-4 with an RBI. The hit came after three games without a hit, with his last one recorded on Friday against the Oakland Athletics. It was also his first RBI in four games since May 14 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The San Francisco Giants have pretty much everything going right for them at the moment, with a 28-19 record, they are right on the brink of taking the division lead, only one game away. The National League West is competitive, but that just shows how truly impressive they have been to remain competitive among the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. The team could still use some improvements, notably starting pitching depth, but they have enough talent to suffice at the moment, with Logan Webb tearing things up and some solid showings from Robbie Ray as well. One of the best prospects on the team is pitcher Carson Whisenhunt, who has been absolutely outstanding after being drafted in the second round of the 2022 MLB draft.

Once heralded as the Giants' third baseman of the future, David Villar's time with the organization is likely coming to an end. Villar, 28, was designated for assignment Monday for the second time this season so that Casey Schmitt could be activated from the injured list. If he is not traded, Villar will have the opportunity to elect free agency rather than an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento. Manager Bob Melvin said it was “hard” to deliver the news, but move didn't come as a surprise to Villar, who was still at his locker when the home clubhouse opened to reporters before the Giants began a three-game set against the Kansas City Royals.

Back home and looking to snap this losing streak

The Athletics have reinstated J.T. Ginn in the starting rotation, and to clear a spot on the 26-man roster, the team announced that they have optioned righty Anthony Maldonado back to Triple-A Las Vegas. Maldonado was promoted to the big-league roster on Friday as an extra reliever when the A's sent starter Osvaldo Bido to Triple-A, and designated Jason Alexander for assignment. The move to send Maldonado back to Las Vegas was more or less expected as he was there to help get the staff through the weekend. The 27-year-old made his A's debut on Friday, coming into the game with the A's already trailing WIlmer Flores and the San Francisco Giants 7-1 at that point.

With the A's now in West Sacramento, it has become a battle traveled over Interstate 80, no longer a debate between "The Town" and "The City," but a competition between a small market and a big market.
