It was a bit surprising to see them sell at the trade deadline after acquiring star slugger Rafael Devers not too long before.

Batting seventh in the lineup, Lee grounded out in his first two trips to the plate before flying out to third base in his third at-bat.

Jerar Encarnacion cannot catch a break. Aside from the trade for veteran Rafael Devers, which saw them ship out Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello, and James Tibbs III, the club also made a few moves to solidify their future. San Francisco traded reliever Tyler Rogers on July 30 to the New York Mets in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jose Butto, right-handed pitching prospect Blade Tidwell, and outfielder prospect Drew Gilbert.

Pirates left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney had a tough start in the top of the first inning, as he gave up a single to left fielder Heliot Ramos and hit designated hitter Rafael Devers with a pitch.

The San Diego Padres signed free agent left-handed pitcher CJ Widger to a minor league contract on Tuesday. This is the second time the Padres have signed Widger to a minor league contract after they signed the southpaw in November 2024. A month after acquiring Widger, the San Francisco Giants purchased his contract from the Padres in the Rule 5 Draft.

The San Francisco Giants were a surprisingly active team ahead of the MLB trade deadline, but not in the fashion many would have predicted. After making a massive splash in mid-June, acquiring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox, the Giants looked destined to be a team that would aggressively look for upgrades again when the MLB trade deadline approached at the end of July. President of baseball operations Buster Posey had shown on multiple occasions his willingness to aggressively pursue upgrades and it was expected he would continue doing that. Alas, the team's production cratered since acquiring Devers and Posey did the smart thing, pivoting and adjusting the game plan.
