The San Francisco Giants are in the thick of the National League West race in large part because of how well their pitching staff has performed. Logan Webb and Robbie Ray are anchoring the starting rotation currently as the seasoned veterans, backed by a trio of youngsters because Justin Verlander landed on the injured list and Jordan Hicks has been shifted back to a relief pitcher. Landen Roupp, who won the No. 5 job in spring training, has been performing well.

No one expected the Giants to be as good as they have been in 2025. After two strong months of baseball, San Francisco can only be seen as a legitimate contender.

Verlander struggled with velocity and command because of discomfort during his most recent start on May 18 against the Athletics, a game which he left after four innings. The move was retroactive to May 19 and the Giants are hopeful Verlander will be back after missing just two starts. Verlander said the issue wasn't related to the neck problems that sidelined him for much of the 2024 season.

The San Francisco Giants are starting to cool down from their hot start, and a huge part of the reason why is an offense that overall is not holding up its end of the bargain. Through the first third of the season, the Giants have done an incredible job being able to keep pace in the toughest division in baseball and sit just two games out of first place. Entering the year, San Francisco had what most saw as a no better than average offense, and the underrated unit was right near the Top 10 in most categories across baseball through the first month. The next one was ugly though, and in the last 30 days the Giants rank outside the Top 20 in runs scored.
