For most players in Major League Baseball, Friday was just another night of hitting, throwing, and catching. The 26-year-old Taiwanese hurler entered the game in the second inning with the Giants already up 2-0, thanks to a Rafael Devers' home run. Teng tossed five scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits, striking out four batters, and allowing just one walk.

Just a little over a week after being traded from the New York Mets organization, VFL Drew Gilbert has been called up by the San Francisco Giants and will likely make his Major League debut during this weekend's series against the Washington Nationals. Gilbert will be the fourth former Vol to make his MLB debut this season, joining second baseman Christian Moore (Angels) and pitchers Chase Dollander (Rockies) and Blade Tidwell (Mets).

The New York Yankees have found a star in outfielder Cody Bellinger, and to this point, the centerfielder has made the team's trade worth it. Bellinger is set to hit the open market after the 2025 season, potentially ending his time with the Yankees. New York has quickly welcomed him into their star-studded lineup, and he's soared, becoming one of their best players this season. Left-handed pitcher Alex Wood posted a long message on social media Friday announcing his retirement after 12 major league seasons that included a World Series title with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. Wood began his post on Instagram by saying he had “immense gratitude” following a career in which the 34-year-old was an All-Star selection in 2017 and reached the postseason seven times. Wood's retirement comes after he went 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA in nine starts for the Oakland Athletics last season. Overall, the 6-foot-4 pitcher from Charlotte, North Carolina, went 77-68 with a 3.78 ERA over 278 games split between five teams, including two stints with the Dodgers.

The San Francisco Giants have dealt with a relatively large number of injuries throughout their 2025 campaign, both to major key players and critical role players who fill out the lineup. An additional injury came to light recently for the Giants, which will hold one of their outfielders out for a decent period of time as he looks to recover from a hamstring setback. Rotational outfielder Jerar Encarnacion was recently diagnosed with a right hamstring strain after leaving a game with the injury. In addition, the team will be designating outfielder Daniel Johnson for assignment, making room on the 40-man roster for one of their most highly regarded prospects, who is set to make an MLB debut sooner rather than later.

The San Francisco Giants have had an extremely topsy-turvy 2025 season by pretty much all accounts. One second, they were at the top of the National League West, competing with the best of the best, and the next, they were selling off veteran pieces at the MLB trade deadline. It is unclear the vision of the franchise heading into August and September, as they sit with a 58-57 record in third place in the division. One of the names that has started to really break out in a big way through his first few games in August is outfielder Carter Howell, currently with Double-A Richmond.

Gilbert is the tenth Vol to reach the big leagues in the Tony Vitello coaching era and the eighth from Tennessee's 2022 team. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The San Francisco Giants called up VFL and former outfielder Drew Gilbert, the team announced on X. Gilbert was selected No. 28 overall in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. The Stillwater, Minnesota native was traded to the Mets by the Astros in 2023, but just recently, on July 30, the Mets traded Gilbert and former Vols pitcher Blade Tidwell as part of a package to get pitcher Tyler Rogers from the Giants.
