David Villar's time with SF Giants likely nearing an end after second DFA
Once heralded as the Giants' third baseman of the future, David Villar's time with the organization is likely coming to an end. Villar, 28, was designated for assignment Monday for the second time this season so that Casey Schmitt could be activated from the injured list. If he is not traded, Villar will have the opportunity to elect free agency rather than an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento. Manager Bob Melvin said it was “hard” to deliver the news, but move didn't come as a surprise to Villar, who was still at his locker when the home clubhouse opened to reporters before the Giants began a three-game set against the Kansas City Royals.
Athletics Option Former Miami Marlins Righty to Triple-A
The Athletics have reinstated J.T. Ginn in the starting rotation, and to clear a spot on the 26-man roster, the team announced that they have optioned righty Anthony Maldonado back to Triple-A Las Vegas. Maldonado was promoted to the big-league roster on Friday as an extra reliever when the A's sent starter Osvaldo Bido to Triple-A, and designated Jason Alexander for assignment. The move to send Maldonado back to Las Vegas was more or less expected as he was there to help get the staff through the weekend. The 27-year-old made his A's debut on Friday, coming into the game with the A's already trailing WIlmer Flores and the San Francisco Giants 7-1 at that point.
Heliot Ramos Stars for Giants as They Finish A's Sweep
Heliot Ramos hit a leadoff homer in the first inning and had a go-ahead single in the eighth, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Athletics on Sunday that completed a series sweep. The three-game set was the teams' first meeting in the Northern California rivalry since the Athletics relocated from Oakland to Sacramento. With the Giants trailing 2-1 in the eighth, LaMonte Wade Jr. hit a leadoff triple and Patrick Bailey drove him in with a single to tie it.

Legendary San Francisco Giants Starter Opens Up About Latest Rough Outing
The tightly contested ballgame ended in a final score of 3-2, with slugger Heliot Ramos' eighth-inning RBI single securing the victory. Any win over a hated rival is always cause for celebration, but this victory in particular was overshadowed a bit by the concerning performance the veteran starter and future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander had on the mound. Verlander lasted just four innings, giving up two earned runs and walking one batter in the process. Luckily for San Francisco, Verlander was able to limit the damage before things got out of hand.
Takeaways from 'Interstate 80' Series Between NorCal Rivals A's and Giants
San Francisco and Sacramento have added a new layer to their rivalry. With the A's now in West Sacramento, it has become a battle traveled over Interstate 80, no longer a debate between "The Town" and "The City," but a competition between a small market and a big market. The Sacramento Kings know a thing or two about that. The NBA's Golden State Warriors-Sacramento Kings rivalry is the most competitive it has been in years, with many contentious regular and postseason games.
Verlander has concerning outing, but Heliot Ramos comes through for SF Giants
Justin Verlander came into the season with 262 wins, the most in Major League Baseball. Depending on how he's feeling after struggling through four innings Sunday as the Giants came back in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Athletics 3-2 at Oracle Park, it may be a while before he gets to 263. Verlander walked five batters and threw 84 pitches, topping out at 93 miles per hour. “I was dealing with something physically that I was able to work through,” Verlander said.
Pirates Pitcher Andrew Heaney Would Be Perfect Trade Target for Giants
With the San Francisco Giants off to a great start this season, the team should be buyers come the MLB trade deadline. One of the biggest surprises of the year has been the performance of the Giants. In arguably the best division in baseball, San Francisco is finding ways to win games and keep pace with some of the top teams in the sport. The Giants weren't expected to be a team that was going to be well over .500 at this point in the season, but now they have to change their expectations for the year.

Jordan Hicks accepts move to bullpen but hopes to return to Giants rotation
Jordan Hicks is accepting his move to the San Francisco Giants bullpen but wants to return to the rotation. Hicks signed a four-year, $44 million deal with the Giants during the offseason with the intent of starting after primarily spending his first few seasons as a reliever. The 28-year-old right-hander was 1-5 with a 6.55 ERA in nine starts and the Giants decided to move Hicks to the bullpen in the middle of the season, as they did last year.
How Hayden Birdsong, Jordan Hicks reacted to SF Giants rotation swap
Hayden Birdsong of the Giants came to Oracle Park Sunday knowing he wasn't going to pitch in the final game of a three-game series against the Athletics. Things are more uncertain with Jordan Hicks. While going back to the bullpen isn't something Hicks wanted, he's not going to make any waves. Birdsong will make his first start of the season Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals, the second of a three-game series to close out the homestand and preceding a nine-game road trip to Washington, Detroit and MIami.
Giants Superstar Reliever Has Returned to Form, Will He Become Closer Again?
The San Francisco Giants are right in the thick of the National League playoff picture, climbing their way near the top of the divisional and wild card standings and finding new ways to win games. In either scenario though, a constant has emerged to help shut games down when it's needed the most, and it's one of the things San Francisco missed most during their floundering 2024 campaign. Giants reliever Camilo Doval has done more than just get back to his All-Star form, he's having the best season of his career since being moved from the closer role in favor of Ryan Walker.
