SF Giants cap spring with MLB-best 21st win vs. Tigers. Does it matter?
Not long into his first spring training as the Giants' new manager, Bob Melvin was mad. “No one's going to remember it, but we remember it right now, and every game you suit up for, you go out there to win,” Melvin fumed to reporters last February. There was no such issue this spring, which the Giants finished off under the Tuesday afternoon sun in the same fashion as most of their previous 30 exhibitions. Jordan Hicks pitched an efficient five-plus innings, Tyler Fitzgerald smacked a two-run homer and scored a run, and the Giants beat the Tigers, 4-3.
River Cats beat Giants in exhibition game
For the next eight months, there will be plenty of baseball games at Sutter Health Park. The San Francisco Giants made the trek to Yolo County to play the Sacramento River Cats, who are the Giants' AAA affiliate, in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon. The Giants took an early lead, but the River Cats came away with a 4-3 win in front of 14,014 enthusiastic fans. Sutter Health Park is the temporary home for the Athletics, who play their home games in West Sacramento until, at least 2027, when they are projected to move to Las Vegas.
Terry Francona-led Reds open with Giants
With a not-so-new manager in place, the Cincinnati Reds kick off the 2025 season Thursday when they host the San Francisco Giants in the traditional National League opener. After taking a year off to recuperate and rejuvenate, Terry Francona brings 1,950 wins and two World Series titles to the Reds' dugout. San Francisco counters with ace right-hander Logan Webb (13-10, 3.47 ERA), who has posted double-figure wins in four consecutive seasons.
Lou Trivino, out of MLB since 2022, earns SF Giants' final bullpen spot
Three years since he last stepped on a big-league mound, Lou Trivino will be in the Giants' bullpen on Opening Day. Trivino and Spencer Bivens both overcame long odds to claim the final two spots in manager Bob Melvin's relief corps. The eight-man bullpen group came into clearer view in the past 24 hours, as Melvin announced both pitchers had made the team while Sean Hjelle was optioned to Triple-A. Trivino, a non-roster invitee, had to be added to the 40-man roster.
Five things that must go right for Giants to exceed 2025 expectations
The entrance to the home clubhouse at Oracle Park was remodeled in recent months, with new lights ringing the doors to provide a bit more ambience should the Giants choose to once again celebrate wins by turning the room into a nightclub. The messaging is as clear as it gets, and Buster Posey's fingerprints are all over the changes, along with those trophies, of course. It's been over a decade, though, since the third one was acquired, and during that time period the Giants have made the postseason just twice. FanGraphs projects the Giants at 80 wins and in fourth place for a third straight season.

San Francisco Giants Make Final Decision on High-Upside Reliever for Opening Day
The San Francisco Giants are making some final decisions regarding their Opening Day roster. Ryan Walker will be the main closer for the team while Camilo Doval is poised to have a bounce back year in a set up or high-leverage role. As reported by Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, manager Bob Melvin announced that Spencer Bivens will be added to the bullpen. Bivens made his debut last season, and he pitched really well.
Family business: How Zack Minasian ascended to role of SF Giants' GM
When the San Francisco Giants hired Minasian to serve as the team's new general manager, Zack and his brother, Perry, the general manager of the Los Angeles Angels, became the first siblings in Major League history to simultaneously hold the title. As kids, the Minasian brothers — Zack, Perry, Calvin, Rudy — played their own version of fantasy baseball, drafting teams under very specific constraints.
San Francisco Giants Add Star Reliever to Roster, DFA Veteran Slugger
The San Francisco Giants have made quite a few roster moves in preparation for Opening Day, many of which come on the pitching side of things as their rotation and bullpen pieces begin to come together. Landon Roupp being the fifth starter was surprising, but he is a worthy addition. Hayden Birdsong also made the roster, but will begin in the bullpen for the team. Per Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle, veteran reliever Lou Trivino has been selected to their Major League roster, adding him as a piece for the bullpen to open the season.
Highlights of SF Giants' 2025 schedule: Adames and Verlander's homecomings, Snell's return to Oracle Park, Fourth of July in Sacramento
Buster Posey is back calling the shots for the Giants, this time leading them in the front office instead of from behind home plate. The Giants haven't made the postseason since his final year as a player in 2021. San Francisco has gone 240-246 over the last three seasons. The Giants will make trips to Detroit, Houston and New York to face the Mets, setting up the possibility that new Giant pitcher and future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander could pitch at each of his old ballparks.

Giants Notes: Bivens added to bullpen after breakthrough season
Bob Melvin has been revealing his Opening Day roster one piece at a time. Spencer Bivens will be in the bullpen, Melvin announced, adding another chapter to one of the best stories on the roster. The right-hander made his big-league debut last season at the age of 29 after years of pitching in independent leagues and the minors. "The story is great, but the performance is what got him to the big leagues and kept him here," Melvin said.
Tigers' Tarik Skubal marvels at Robbie Ray throwing pitch he taught him
Robbie Ray should be expecting a text message from Tarik Skubal. Later that evening, Ray mostly mowed through the Tigers' lineup in a 6-4 exhibition win — while wielding Skubal's own weapon. The two left-handers share more than similar arm slots and company in the exclusive club of Cy Young winners. The changeup Ray added to his arsenal this spring is a product of a text message the 33-year-old veteran sent to the Hayward native this offseason.
