When Buster Posey took over as president of baseball operations of the San Francisco Giants, he knew he was facing a tall task. Early on, he agreed to a massive seven-year, $182 million deal with shortstop Willy Adames, formerly of the Milwaukee Brewers. It was the largest contract in franchise history, a move that killed two birds with one stone. Shortstop was deemed the biggest need for the franchise heading into the offseason and Adames is regarded as one of the most impactful offensive players at the position.

The Giants went 1-5 against the same two teams that also included a sweep by the host Marlins last Tuesday through Thursday. Giants Look To Have Dodged Major Bullet Not Bringing Back Ace in Free Agency
This past offseason, the San Francisco Giants had a massive void created in their starting rotation. After putting together a stellar second half of the 2024 campaign, their ace, Blake Snell, declined the second year on his contract to re-enter free agency. It ended up being the right move for him, as he was able to land the long-term, lucrative contract he sought when he hit the market ahead of the 2024 season. Not only did the Giants now have to fill a spot in their rotation, they had to watch Snell sign a five-year, $182 million deal with one of their biggest rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Struggling Giants Reliever Not as Awful as His Numbers Suggest
The San Francisco Giants' bullpen has a real argument as the single best unit in all of baseball. It's deep, with a blend of young ascending players and experienced veterans that gives manager Bob Melvin the ability to get strikeouts, force soft contact, or anything in between. Ryan Walker entered the season as one of the faces to the Giants' bullpen before anyone know how consistently dominant of a unit it would be. Walker, 29, has a 4.64 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 2025.

Giants Sign Longtime Dodgers' Catcher to Minor League Deal
The San Francisco Giants are bringing on some extra help behind home plate, signing veteran backstop and longtime Los Angeles Dodger Austin Barnes to a minor league deal. Barnes, who spent the last 11 seasons donning Dodgers blue, was released by his former team back in May after getting off to a lackluster start in his age 35 campaign. Per MLB Trade Rumors, the Giants have optioned the vet to their Arizona Complex League affiliate for a ramp-up period before the team eventually moves him up to Triple-A Sacramento.

The Diamondbacks are in dire need of some winning baseball, but that may be tough to accomplish against a sturdy San Francisco pitching staff.
