The Giants Missed a Major Opportunity in their Series with St. Louis
In what has been a roller coaster ride of a season, the San Francisco Giants have been considered both in and out of the playoff chase at different times. Just as they looked like they were hitting full speed down the stretch, they were stonewalled in St. Louis, losing two of three to the Cardinals. In recent weeks, the slugging of hitters like Rafael Devers and Willy Adames led a San Fran surge, and the clubhouse demeanor changed. With rookie Drew Gilbert and third baseman Matt Chapman bringing a new intensity, the Giants' fan base had settled in for what promised to be an exciting race.

Chestnut, who grew up in Vallejo and attended San Jose State, just reclaimed his title at the annual Nathan's Fourth of July hotdog eating contest in Coney Island, when he ate 70-1/2 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, falling short of his previous record, 76, which he set in 2021.

SF Giants drop two of three to Cardinals, prepare for crucial six-game homestand
In a vacuum, the Giants had an acceptable road trip. The Giants do not exist in a vacuum. “Normally, you think a 4-2 trip is not a bad trip, but in our position right now, we have to win more games than that,” said manager Bob Melvin. Now, they enter their most important homestand of the season: Three games against the surging Arizona Diamondbacks, who are making their own late push for the final wild card spot, and three games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are clinging to the division lead.

Riley O'Brien finds late-inning home as avoiding IL pays off with win, save: Cardinals Extra
The payoff for the Cardinals' patience and attempt to avoid the injured list for reliever Riley O'Brien was his presence in the ninth inning of two wins this past weekend. Unavailable for back-to-back series earlier in the week as he dealt with some discomfort in his right shoulder, O'Brien and the Cardinals made the decision to see if extended rest would make him available without missing the mandatory 15 days on the IL. The weekend series against the San Francisco Giants was the test of that approach and whether the soreness would subside and he'd could contribute. A win Saturday and a save Sunday — and the Cardinals have their answer.
